THE ART OF ROBERT SIM
Robert Sim was born, raised, and lives in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He studied at the School of Art at the University of Manitoba from 1985 to 1989. A sculptor as well as painter and draughtsman, he works with a variety of media, ranging from clay, plaster, and wood to digital photography.
Sim prefers to work without any preconceived ideas, believing that visual art is a language of its own and explains itself in its own terms. One of his favourite quotes regarding art comes form the Polish/French painter, Balthus, “Painting is a language which cannot be replaced by another language. I don’t know what to say about what I paint, really.”
Sim is the recipient of two Manitoba Arts Council grants. He has participated in a number of shows in Winnipeg. One in particular is the group exhibition Subconscious City, held at the Winnipeg Art Gallery in 2008.
